Diverse and inclusive treatment options for Pain Management
Pain management is a multidisciplinary field aimed at alleviating long-term pain to improve patients' quality of life. While pharmacotherapy is often the first approach, alternative or combined treatments are used when pain is unresponsive to medication. These treatments involve various healthcare professionals and the techniques include patient education, operant conditioning, cognitive behavioral therapy, classical conditioning etc,. The psychological approach recognizes pain involves psychological and social factors, considering cognitive and behavioral constructs and environmental influences. Treatment modalities for low-back pain include pharmacologic (Paracetamol/NSAIDs) and non-pharmacologic (exercise, lifestyle changes, alternate therapies). Stages of treatment include diagnosis and initial management (NSAIDs, muscle relaxants), conservative management (activity modification, lifestyle alterations etc.,), and operative intervention (surgery for lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis). Passive modalities involve cold, heat, or electricity (moist packs, ice massage, TENS). Alternate therapies include chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, Feldenkrais, holistic approaches, gentle yoga, magnetic therapies, and easy Pilates.
